2026 Summer Bus Information
The Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) and the City of Madison’s Metro Transit are once again partnering to provide free summer bus access for students in grades 6 through 12, including recent high school graduates.
The Summer Youth Pass program allows eligible students to ride Metro buses at no cost throughout the summer, helping students maintain independence and stay connected to educational, employment and community opportunities while school is out of session.
Students who already have an active Metro youth pass can continue using the same card over the summer without taking any additional steps.
Students who do not already have a pass can access the Summer Youth Pass virtually through Metro Transit’s Fast Fare mobile app. To receive a pass, students should email mymetrobus@cityofmadison.com from their MMSD student email account, ending in @madison.k12.wi.us, with the subject line “Summer Youth Pass.”
Physical passes will also remain available on an as-needed basis. Before June 5, students may request a pass through their school office. After that date, physical passes will be available at the student’s feeder high school during summer school.
Summer Youth Passes are active Friday, June 12th through Monday, September 7th.
Additional information about the Summer Youth Pass program, as well as the many other resources available to MMSD students over the coming break, is available on the district’s website.
2025-2026 School Year Bus Information
The District does not generally provide transportation to high school students. Rather, the District and City of Madison work cooperatively to ensure that Madison Metro Transit routes are available to students as a primary means of transportation. District-provided Madison Metro bus passes are available for students who:
-
Reside within the boundaries of the school attendance area
- Reside more than one and one-half (1.5) miles from their attendance area school.
- Have demonstrable financial need, including qualifying for the Free & Reduced Meal Program.
Students who qualify for a district funded bus pass can fill out this google form using their district google account to request one and then pick it up in their Neighborhood Office before school, during lunch, or after school during the first weeks of school.
Students can ride the bus for free during the first weeks of school until they receive their bus pass.
