Winter Sports Wrap Up: A Season to Remember

Winter Sports Wrap Up: A Season to Remember

As the winter sports season draws to a close, our student-athletes have given us plenty to celebrate. From the hardwood to the pool and the wrestling mat, it has been a historic run for our schools. Here is a look back at the incredible achievements of the season:

Basketball Dominance

It was a banner year for girls' basketball in the Big 8 Conference. La Follette and Vel Phillips Memorial high schools both rose to the top, finishing the season as Big 8 Conference Champions.

The accolades didn't stop with team trophies. Nyajuacni Riak (La Follette) was named the Big 8 Player of the Year, recognizing her outstanding skill and leadership on the court. Additionally, Vel Phillips Memorial Girls Basketball Coach Marques Flowers was honored as the Big 8 Coach of the Year, a testament to the incredible program built this season. The Memorial girls team’s season came to a close in sectionals against Brookfield East March 5, after an exciting postseason run.

On the boys' side, the Memorial Spartans continued the winning tradition by claiming the Big 8 Conference Championship title, proving once again that our district is a powerhouse in Wisconsin basketball.

Making Waves in Swim & Dive

Our swimmers and divers reached new heights at the WIAA State Meet. AJ Beard from Vel Phillips Memorial put on a spectacular performance to become the WIAA State Champion in Diving.

Individual excellence continued with Max Garbacz (West High), who captured two state titles as the WIAA State Champion in both the 200 IM and the 500 Free. Overall, the Madison West team showed incredible depth and talent, finishing 5th overall.

Wrestling Warriors

The wrestling season was highlighted by grit and determination. We are proud to congratulate our wrestling state qualifiers who represented our schools on the biggest stage, Maya Assad Thompson (West High) and Melvin Hunter (East High).

A special shoutout goes to our Girls Big 8 Conference Champions, who dominated their weight classes to bring home individual titles:

  • Emmy Martinez (La Follette)
  • Maya Assad Thompson (West High)
  • Persepho Schmidt (Memorial)
  • Stella Gustafson (West High)

Hockey Heroes

The Cap City Cougars co-op girls hockey team competed in the state semifinal Thursday, March 5, featuring two MMSD student-athletes. Congrats to junior Abigail Godfrey (La Follette High School) and freshman Rachel Olm (East High) for their strong performance all season long.

Congratulations to all our athletes, coaches and families for a winter season filled with pride and excellence!
