Southside Naming Proposals Posted - Share Your Feedback
The public is invited to provide feedback on the naming proposals for Southside Elementary - 175 proposals were received in the submission timeframes. As outlined in Board policy 6700, a 30-day window opened June 17, 2024 to share comments on the submitted names. You can review the proposals and submit feedback on the names at the MMSD naming webpage.
All proposals received are posted on the website. Numerous proposals were received to name the school after Lori Mann Carey, an MMSD alumna, prominent Madison Southsider and co-founder of the Mann Educational Opportunity Fund. Other proposals suggest naming the school after Milton McPike, longtime East High School administrator and former UW regent, and Ada Deer, the first Native American woman from Wisconsin to run for U.S. Congress and a delegate to the United Nations Human Rights Committee.
On May 6, the MMSD Board of Education established a 12-member ad hoc Citizens Naming Committee, composed of Southside staff, parents and community members. The Committee held its first meeting virtually on June 17 at 5:30 p.m.; they discussed meeting protocols and procedures (agenda link). You can watch the livestream of these meetings via the Board of Education’s YouTube channel.
Students, families, staff and community members can continue to submit feedback about the naming process and naming proposals; comments will be shared with the Board and Ad Hoc Committee.
