Emergency Procedures

The safety of our students and staff is our top priority

We want our schools to be safe and welcoming learning environments that nurture the cognitive, emotional and physical well-being of all students, staff and families. We believe that the safest schools are those that foster a climate of support and respect and that instill a sense of community. Building security, incident response and threat assessments are vital components as well.

District Safety Plan Revision 2020-21 School Year

Wisconsin Act 143 requires an individualized safety plan for each school building and facility that is regularly occupied by students. We submitted our first annual district and school safety plans to the Department of Justice - Office of School Safety (DOJ-OSS) in December, 2018.  Districts are required to update their safety plans. MMSD has made minor revisions to the public district safety plan for 2020-2021. Schools will also make recommendations for minor revisions to their confidential safety plans for 2020-2021. Moving forward, the district and school safety plans will be annually reviewed and/or revised in the second semester capturing the work of the current school year.  Revised plans will be shared with Board of Education, Madison Police Department, school communities, and the DOJ each summer, to prepare for the upcoming school year.

Standard Response Protocol

In the 2019-20 school year, we incorporated the Standard Response Protocol into our emergency procedures in line with guidance from the Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Office of School Safety and national recommendations on school safety. It incorporates many of the concepts we already use but offers more clarity and consistency in terminology among schools and first responders across the country. Each school year, students will receive age-appropriate instruction on what to do in each of these scenarios through lesson plans, slide presentations, class discussions, videos, and more.
