Grading
Standards Based Learning (SBL) at East
Our Guiding Questions:
- Did students learn what we taught?
- How do we know?
- What do we do next?
What will students see and experience?
- Students will still earn letter grades (same transcripts for post-secondary)
- Teachers will still teach and assess based on standards
- Teachers will still meet students needs through assessment, feedback, and reflection
- Students will have additional opportunities to improve their grades and demonstrate mastery
Grade Calculations
Course grades are determined by a student’s mastery of core skills for the course as demonstrated on summative assessments. Throughout the semester, student scores will be communicated using proficiency scales and will be converted to a letter grade for the 9-week, 13-week, and semester grade reports.
- 4-Week Progress: reported as CP (continuing progress) or I (incomplete)
- 9-Week and 13-Week Progress: reported as a letter grade (A, B, C, D, or I for incomplete)
- Semester Grades: reported as a letter grade (A, B, C, D, or I for incomplete). Incomplete will transition to a NC for No Credit if not resolved within 9 weeks. This grade will be recorded for official use on student transcripts and permanent academic records.
Semester letter grades will be calculated according to the following:
| Letter Grade | What We Intend to Communicate | Calculation Thresholds |
|---|---|---|
| A | A student is well prepared for success in college, career, and community |
Proficient mastery of all core skills + Advanced mastery of at least one core skill |
| B | A student is prepared for success in college, career, and community | (At least) Proficient mastery of majority of core skills [An IE in any core skill will result in an incomplete] |
| C | A student is somewhat prepared for success in college, career, and community | (At least) Developing mastery of majority of core skills [An IE in any core skill will result in an incomplete] |
| D | A student is minimally prepared for success in college, career, and community | (At least) Emerging mastery in all core skills [An IE in any core skill will result in an incomplete] |
| I | A student needs to provide evidence of preparedness for success in college, career, and community | Insufficient evidence in ANY core skill results in an Incomplete |
| NC | A student is not yet prepared for success in college, career, and community | Only assigned when an Incomplete is unresolved |
