Volunteer Opportunities
Madison East High School is home to a diverse and exciting group of young people. They have come to East from a wide variety of family, ethnic, and national backgrounds, to pursue their education and prepare for adulthood. They will study, art, civics, history, languages, literature, mathematics, and science, as well as develop career and life skills in areas as diverse as business and fashion. Many find their studies to be challenging. Please come and meet our students—you can help them reach their goals.

Unless otherwise noted, placements possible Mon—Fri. Most volunteers come 1 or 2 days a week.
East High School is located at 2222 East Washington Avenue, between 4th and 5th Streets. On-street parking is located within 1-2 blocks. From the UW-Madison campus, take Madison Metro routes #4, #5 or #6 (~ 20 minutes).
Note: Board of Education policy requires all persons working directly with students to complete a form authorizing a basic background check, the results of which may limit placement opportunities. Learn more and access the forms.
Volunteers are allowed in the building but must first have an ‘approved’ status in Volunteer Tracker. The steps are outlined below.
-
Fill out the Volunteer Tracker Application (through AppGarden) with background check (Please make sure to use your personal/organization email address when you create an account to receive the confirmation email)
-
Complete the volunteer trainings as outlined on the volunteer website
-
Once you have completed the steps outlined above, the Volunteer Tracker/AppGarden will automatically notify you via email that you are approved.
-
When you receive that email, please forward it to ejnevel@madison.k12.wi.us and she can make sure your name is updated on East’s Approved Volunteer List that Security Assistants can check at the Welcome Center when volunteers check in.
Checking in and out of the building
Once approved, volunteers should be listed on the East High School Approved Volunteer List at the Welcome Center. Volunteers should always check in at the Welcome Center (on 4th street, off the small parking lot at Door 2) and sign in using the Visitor Aware software, and receive a volunteer ID badge and lanyard. This badge should be returned to the welcome center when the volunteer leaves and they should sign out using VisitorAware in the Welcome Center.
Application
To be considered an “approved volunteer”, volunteers must complete two steps:
1. Application & Background check (“App-Garden Online)
2. Required training modules
Trainings
Please note training is available asynchronously (recorded), and only needs to be completed once. This training is required of all volunteers (community and family) and non-MMSD personnel who come into school buildings and work with students. These training modules are important for the safety and well-being of students, staff, and volunteers. The objectives of the trainings are: safety and security protocols; and grounding in MMSD anti-racist mission/vision, identity and relationships, and strategies. Volunteer registers ONCE, even if volunteering at multiple sites. Volunteers are automatically sent emails to re-register when their background check is due.
Background checks
If a volunteer is supporting the school through special events like booster club or book fairs, etc, and they will not be alone with students, they do not need background checks. (Level 1 positions) However, if a volunteer may have unsupervised contact with students such as a tutor, field trip chaperone or classroom assistant, then a background check is required. (Level 2 positions) Social security numbers (SSN) are required for national criminal background checks. If you are unable to provide a SSN, please contact the partnerships department (partnerships@madison.k12.wi.us) for further instructions prior to filling out the volunteer application. A background check will still be completed, but will take longer. Please note that U.S. citizenship is not a requirement for volunteering, and citizenship status is not a part of a background check report.
